Rural Home Compass is an independent information website for first-time owners of homes with private wells and septic systems—especially people who do not yet know which questions to ask.

Editorial standard

Every indexable page needs a named source, review date, visible limitations, and a useful next action. Location pages require facts that actually change the answer.

Safety standard

We do not diagnose water safety, septic failure, or electrical faults. Tools stop at safe observations and direct higher-risk work to local authorities or qualified professionals.

Commercial standard

No paid offer or provider connection is currently enabled. Future commercial actions must disclose the relationship nearby and preserve eligibility, safety blocking and a non-commercial fallback. Compensation must not determine technical findings.

Publishing workflow

  1. Research from primary public sources and current partner terms.
  2. Separate facts, estimates, assumptions, and hypotheses.
  3. Review the template, calculation, safety language, and commercial placement.
  4. Index only after the page passes the unique-data and QA gates.

Evidence, scope and accountability

We prioritize EPA, CDC, state and local agency materials, with technical sources where needed. A source supports its specific claim, not every RHC recommendation. Our task sequences, tool adjustments and triage priorities are planning advice—not official formulas, professional findings or legal deadlines.

When official sources conflict, we preserve their conditions and unresolved differences rather than inventing a single rule. Review dates describe evidence actually checked; a build does not refresh them. Local procedures, permits and property conditions can change the answer. See Sources and methodology.
