Well pump keeps cycling: what the pattern can tell you
A pump that starts and stops rapidly is not just an annoying sound. Pressure-tank drawdown is meant to limit starts, so repeated short cycles can signal a system condition that should be evaluated before pump life is shortened.

- Time several cycles and note whether water is being used when cycling occurs.
- Look for visible leaks and record gauge behavior, but leave pressure and electrical adjustments to qualified people.
- Rapid cycling can involve tank air or bladder condition, leaks, controls, sizing, or other pump-system faults.
Document the cycle
Record how many seconds the pump runs and rests, which fixtures or appliances are active, the visible gauge range, and whether cycling continues when no water should be used. This gives a contractor a reproducible symptom rather than a guess.
Understand the pressure tank role
The Minnesota Department of Health explains that pressure-tank drawdown provides water between pump starts. In tanks where air and water are not permanently separated, loss of the air cushion can lead to waterlogging and rapid cycling.
Know the stop line
Do not remove electrical covers, bridge controls, or change air charge without the system-specific procedure and proper qualifications. Shut down and escalate promptly for overheating, arcing, burning odors, leaking electrical components, or a pump that cannot build pressure.
